Julia Alvarez

Annotated Bibliography

Alvarez, Julia. How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents. New York: Penguin Group, 1992. Print. I decided to use the book as a source because it  contains the short story. The actual story is the best source to back up all quotations. The book is also useful to find more about the theme within the story, and to reveal more about the characters and their roles.

—.“The Kiss.” Literature: Reading Fiction, Poetry, and Drama. Ed Robert DiYanni. 6th ed. New York: McGrawn Hill, 2008. 415-23. Print. This source introduced me to the short story. When I read the first paragraphs, the story caught my attention quick. I think the story caught my attention because I can relate to certain points mentioned of the family’s experiences. The story on its own is also very satisfying because of the message it possesses.

—. Julia Alvarez: official author website. 4 February 2010. Sienna M Potts. 15 February 2010 <http://www.juliaalvarez.com/>. This is the website in which Julia reveals herself to the public. Here Julia gives the latest news about her literature and overviews of her books.most importantly, the website is an official website pushed by Julia Alvarez.

“How the García Girls Lost Their Accents.” Novels for Students. Ed. Marie Rose Napierkowski. Vol. 5. Detroit: Gale, 1999. 168-188. Literature Resources from Gale. Web. 19 Mar. 2010. <http://go.galegroup.com/ps/i.do?&id=GALE7CCX2591800020&v=2.1&u=&it=r&p=LitRG&sw=w>. Here is one of the databases I found that focuses on Julia nad her books. it was an eye catcher to me because it possesses most of the information I need for creating an informational site about Julia Alvarez. The information is so much and very rich.

“Julia Alvarez.” Contemporary Literary Criticism. Ed. Jeffrey W. Hunter. Vol. 274. Detroit: Gale, 2009. Literature Resources from Gale. Web. 23 Apr. 2010. <http://go.galegroup.com/ps/i.do?&id=GALE%7CH1123700000&v=2.1&u=lincclin_ircc&it=r&p=LitRG&sw=w>. This is one of the most important works I found. The entire essay focuses on criticism and views on Julia’s work. This is the type of information I need.

Luke. “The Prodigal Son.” Literature: Reading Fiction, Poetry, and Drama. Ed Robert DiYanni. 6th ed. New York: McGrawn Hill, 2008. 27-28. Print. I made this selection because I think that it is a great piece of work to compare with The Kiss. Many things relate and it portraits a similar message but with a different ending.

Varnes, Kathrine. “Julia Alvarez.” New Formalist Poets. Ed. Jonathan N. Barron and Bruce Meyer. Detroit: Gale, 2003. Dictionary of Literary Biography Vol. 282. Literature Resources from Gale. Web. 23Apr.2010. <http://go.galegroup.com/ps/i.do&id=GALE7CH1200011314&v=2.1&u=lincclin_ircc&it=r&p=LitRG&sw=w>. I chose this piece of writing because it talks more about Julia Alvarez’ work. The information is very valuable and it enriches my understanding about the her style in general.
